A Lil Wayne verse can make an already very good song even greater, as evidenced by his monstrous 16 bars on DJ Khaled’s “We Takin’ Above.” And when Wayne was placing collectively the roster for his then-burgeoning Young Income empire, he knew he needed a person who could get his company to the next level in the same method.

Enter Drake.

“The initial factor I stated was this kid’s a superstar,” Weezy informed MTV News about his introduction to Drizzy. “I really don’t think you can don’t forget, but I did some interviews again then when they were asking me about him and I stated he’s greater than me. I cannot sing. I can make a tune, but this child has the actual R&B presence. Then he’s one of the dopest lyricists. That right there, he has a welcoming physical appearance. I knew he was some thing larger than some thing I had envisioned for my company when I ran into this child. I was considering I’m going to set my folks on and we’re heading to be all proper, but then when I ran into this child, I was like, this a superstar, he’s acquired a chance to make my company some thing for real, one thing to be believed of, to be remembered.”

Because that time, of course, Drake has skyrocketed to the leading with a standout mixtape, So Far Gone, and a profitable debut album, Thank Me Later.

What Lil Wayne didn’t know at the time he assembled the YM crew, nonetheless, was that he’d have two franchise stars, the 2nd currently being Nicki Minaj, who also ascended to superstardom in her very own right.

As a result of signing equally rappers, Wayne has managed to turn himself into a mogul on par with Diddy, Jay-Z and his boss, Dollars Money’s Birdman.

“I cannot front, I just believed she was heading to be the new female MC that none of these other feminine MCs can touch,” Wayne stated about Nicki. “But now, she’s blossomed into a megastar with this new perspective and this fashion. Now when I talk to her, I just inform her, ‘Do what you do, baby.’ I employed to be able to go into the studio and say, ‘Nah, don’t say that, really don’t say that.’ You know, ‘That was far better.’ Now, do what you do, baby. I really don’t have a clue about what you are performing appropriate now, but it really is working, do it.”

Zach Galifianakis Scores With Second Appearance On ‘Saturday Night Live’

The idiosyncratic comic sings ‘Annie,’ shaves head, and lampoons ‘The Hangover’ on long running sketch comedy show.

Zach Galifianakis on “Saturday Night Live”

After a well-received performance from host Miley Cyrus last week that contained funny, if fairly straightforward and typical sketches, Saturday Night Live wasted no time in racing back to its anti-comedy roots, thanks to an appearance last night (March 12) from the improvisational and idiosyncratic Zach Galifianakis, who was hosting the program for the second time.

Galifianakis set the episode’s tone early, delivering a monologue chock full of non-sequiturs (“In April, I’ll be babysitting my sister’s kids,” he said. “Via Skype.”), before plunging with gusto into a lip-synched performance of the song “Tomorrow” from “Annie.”

Adorned in the character’s iconic short red dress, Galifianakis pranced and skipped across the stage while pretending to sing at the top of his lungs, simultaneously pulling back cue cards to goad the audience in a bizarre cross between Andy Kaufman’s “Mighty Mouse” and Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues.”

“Clap if you endorse medical marijuana,” one cue card read. “I smoke so much pot sometimes I forget to smoke it,” read another. “Dukakis 2012,” read the last.

From there, Galifianakis appeared as an audience member vocally disappointed that he was at a taping of “The Talk” rather than his preferred “The View,” and an airhorn blowing comic in a pre-taped bit titled “The Original Kings of Catchphrase Comedy Tour.”

But while he also took turns alternately playing the Captain of the Titanic and a Canadian talk show host with a penchant for long vowels, the show’s highlight might have been when Galifianakis appeared on the long running skit “Scared Straight” alongside Kenan Thompson.

Wheeled in on a gurney and dressed to look like Hannibal Lector, Galifianakis and Thompson played words like musical notes, turning names and titles like Helena Bonham Carter, Colin Firth and “Home Alone” into borderline filthy and scatological puns.

“And there won’t be a baby and a papoose, it’ll be a baby’s arm in your caboose,” Galifianakis punned, referencing his star turn in “The Hangover.”

Galifianakis also appeared on the digital short, which revolved around the comic interviewing children to be his new personal assistant.

The musical guest was Jessie J, who brought along B.o.B to perform “Price Tag” during the show’s musical interlude.

What did you think of Galifianakis’s performance on “Saturday Night Live?” Which skit was the funniest? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

B.o.B Was Right Guy For ‘Saturday Night Live’ Duet, Jessie J Says

On Saturday night, Jessie J stormed the “Saturday Night Live” stage bringing her signature sass to the sketch-comedy show. Jessie also brought along B.o.B for her performance of their track, “Price Tag.”

MTV News caught up with the a few days before her “SNL” appearance and she talked to us about why she knew B.o.B would be the perfect fit for the track, which is the lead U.S. single off her debut album, Who You Are.

“I didn’t really want many features on the album. I think that sometimes you get an album and songs seem better if they’ve got like platinum-selling artists on all of them and their features, and I wanted people to judge it on me,” she explained. “And that’s a lot harder thing to do.”

However, if she was going to have a guest feature, it had to be the right guy. “When I wrote ‘Price Tag,’ B.o.B was, like, everywhere and I just loved his sound,” she said. “He’s the same age as me and everything he rapped about, I felt like I would rap about if I were a rapper.”

So when Jessie sat down with producers/songwriters Dr. Luke and Claude Kelley, they decided to holler at the Atlanta native. From there, Jessie did the legwork, traveling from state to state “to random places I had never been” to ensure that she and the rapper got face time to work on the song.

“I didn’t want it to be like, ‘Do that, drop a bar and send it to me.’ I wanted it to be an experience and a journey, so he wrote his bar and he flew to the U.K. to do the video,” she said. “So, no green screen. We’re there together. It was good fun. None of this, ‘Never met him, don’t know what he looks like.’ I’ve proper been there, hugged him and smelled him.”

Odd Future, Prodigy On RapFix Live Weekend Rotation

This past Thursday (March 10), southern spitter Yelawolf graced the RapFix Live show with his cool southern charm. During the “Weekend Rotation” segment where Sway inquires about what industry insiders are checking out in the world of hip hop music, our host then turned the attention on what Yela has been listening to shortly after.

Entertainment producer for AOL Black Voices Brennan Williams has been playing the new Raekwon and Nas collaboration from Rae’s latest album Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang – the track “Rich and Black” reunites the two powerhouses who worked together on Raekwon’s classic debut Only Built For Cuban Linx and the timeless “Verbal Intercourse” track. Brennan also shouted out the recently freed Prodigy of Mobb Deep, digging into the crates to rock the classic Mobb Deep album Infamous.

Reggie Hawkins, program director of Sirius XM Radio’s Hip Hop Nation channel and talent manager for the Shade 45 channel, gave a big nod to west coast trio Pac Div and their new track “Anti-Freeze” from their much buzzed about mixtape hosted by DJ Cannon titled Mania. The track had the internet going nuts when it leaked earlier this year and a recent live video performance of the song piqued the interest of the fans further.

Sway picked Yela’s brain on what tunes he’s feeling and immediately the Alabama native named the popular and zany Los Angeles based collective Odd Future as an act he’s checking for.

Yela kept it in the family by shouting out fellow southern rapper Rittz straight out of Georgia. Rittz just dropped a new mixtape White Jesus, on which Yelawolf serves as the executive producer. Yela mentioned a fellow ‘Bama representative Big K.R.I.T. and G.O.O.D. Music artist Cyhi Da Prince. “That’s what’s I’m really on right now hip hop wise,” shared the Shady Records star.

Slipknot Reveal Donnie Steele To Replace Deceased Bassist Paul Gray

‘We thought it would be a fitting tribute to Paul to play with someone from within the family,’ band says of returning former band mate.
By Shawn Adler

Slipknot

Hard rock super group Slipknot have asked former member Donnie Steele to replace Paul Gray on bass for their upcoming 2011 shows, according to a statement on the band’s website.

The 38-year-old Gray, who had been with the band since their inception, died last year (May 24, 2010) from an accidental overdose of morphine and fentanyl.

“Donnie was in the band at the very beginning, and rather than get an outsider, we thought it would be a fitting tribute to Paul to play with someone from within the family,” the band wrote. “Donnie was great friends with Paul and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate his memory than with someone who was there with us at the very beginning. The eight of us are looking forward to being onstage again and honoring Paul’s legacy with our families in Europe and Brazil this summer.”

Known for their ostentatious performances and aggressive musical edge, the mask-wearing members of the Grammy winning band displayed a different side in an emotional press conference the day after Gray was found dead in an Iowa hotel room, remembering their friend and band mate as “the essence of the band Slipknot,” percussionist Shawn Crahan recalled.

“Paul was there from the very, very beginning, and none of us would be on the path that we’re on now in life or have the sorts of life that we have without him,” he added. “Paul loved the fans. He was kind of the person in the band that really wanted everybody in the band to always get along and just concentrate on the band. He was a really great friend and a really great person. He’s going to be sadly missed, and the world is going to be a different place without him.”

Among other performances, the band will be performing at the Sonisphere Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria on June 21.
